Former Channel One editor Marina Ovsyannikova placed on Russia’s federal wanted list
Mediazona reports that Russia’s Interior Ministry has placed the former Channel One editor Marina Ovsyannikova on the federal wanted list. On Oct. 1, her ex-husband Igor Ovsyannikov, currently employed by RT, claimed that Ovsyannikova had fled from house arrest together with their 11-year-old daughter.
Ovsyannikova was placed under house arrest in August, by a court decision in a “fake news” case.
Last March, Marina Ovsyannikova stormed a live Channel One broadcast with an a poster that read: “No war. Stop the war. Do not believe the propaganda. Here, they lie to you. Russians against war.” She was fined 30,000 rubles on the charge of “participating in an unsanctioned demonstration.”
Soon, Ovsyannikova resigned from Channel One and left Russia, accepting a freelance position with the German Die Welt. On July 3, however, she announced that she was returning to Russia. The same month, she was twice fined on charges of “discrediting” the Russian army. The first fine was for speaking outside the courthouse while the case of the opposition politician Ilya Yashin was being heard. The second fine was in connection with a Facebook post.
In August, a criminal case was launched against Ovsyannikova herself, under the new Russian “fake news” legislation. The court sentenced her to house arrest.
