Russia won’t let opposition politician Boris Nadezhdin run for parliament. Now it won’t let him leave the country, either.
Russian politician Boris Nadezhdin says he has been barred from leaving the country. He learned of the restriction through Gosuslugi, Russia’s government services portal.
“Overnight, an order imposing a travel ban on me arrived via the government services portal,” Nadezhdin wrote on Telegram. “We’re working through it with defense attorneys. They say it’s an unlawful decision. We will appeal.”
Nadezhdin had previously said he was considering leaving Russia out of fear of arrest in a case involving the display of “extremist symbols.” The case stems from a link on Nadezhdin’s social media accounts to a video showing a photograph of Alexei Navalny. He was detained on July 13 and released the same day but ordered to appear in court on July 17.
Even so, Nadezhdin said he would prefer to stay in Russia if given the choice. He called leaving “a headache so big you won’t know what hit you.” “If it’s clear to me that I’ve got two ways this goes — either I go to prison and die in there, or I come out alive and save my family — I’m saving my family,” he said.
Nadezhdin plans to run in elections to the State Duma, the lower house of Russia’s parliament, scheduled for September. He announced his candidacy in June. Shortly afterward, he was added to the registry of “foreign agents” — a status that bars a person from running for office in Russia. If he is convicted of the administrative charge he faces under Article 20.3 of Russia’s Code of Administrative Offenses, he would be barred from seeking elected office for one year. Meduza has reported that security officials are driving the pressure campaign against Nadezhdin in an effort to keep him off the ballot.
