State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin said Friday that the body’s members support President Vladimir Putin’s idea that all public officials should drive Russian-made vehicles.

“We need to start with ourselves. The leaders of the State Duma factions and I discussed the issue of using domestically made vehicles. Everyone supports the decision,” state media quoted him as saying. “We agreed that deputies would drive Moskviches, Ladas, and Auruses.”

Putin called for officials to forego foreign vehicles at a meeting with manufacturing executives on Thursday, resurrecting a policy first proposed by then-Deputy Prime Minister Boris Nemtsov in the 1990s.
