Russia sees record number of daily coronavirus deaths amid spike in cases
Russia’s coronavirus headquarters reported 808 deaths over the past day on the morning of August 12, marking a pandemic record.
The previous fatality record — 799 deaths — was recorded four times this summer: on July 16, 24, and 29, as well as on August 10.
Since the start of the pandemic, 168,049 people have died from the coronavirus in Russia, according to the country’s coronavirus headquarters. Russia has registered more than 6.5 million coronavirus patients in total, of whom more than 5.8 million have recovered so far.
Since June, Russia has seen a spike in coronavirus cases and an increase in mortality. According to data from the State Statistics Service (Rosstat), Moscow registered 16,406 deaths in June 2021 — 7,138 more than in June 2019. In total, Russia recorded 185,655 deaths in June 2021 — 48,418 more than in June 2019.
