Russia to install facial recognition systems to identify drivers at certain border checkpoints by 2024

Russian authorities plan to install facial recognition systems at nine border checkpoints before the end of 2023, the independent Russian outlet Polygon Media reported on Thursday, citing an 830-million-ruble ($11.4 million) tender posted on the site of a Transportation Ministry agency.

According to the listing, the “video analysis system” will “automatically analyze images of faces” in order to identify drivers and compare their faces with all of the data contained in a “biometric database or in a specific list.”

Authorities plan to install the systems at checkpoints on Russia’s borders with China, Poland, Lithuania, and Kazakhstan.
