Ukrainian drones strike Russia’s Saratov region, hitting a residential building and sparking a fire at a military airfield in Engels
A Ukrainian drone attack damaged civilian infrastructure in Engels, according to Roman Busargin, the governor of Russia’s Saratov region. He said there were no casualties and gave no further details about the damage.
Citing eyewitness photos and videos, the independent Telegram channel Astra and the Ukrainian monitoring channel Exilenova+ reported that one of the drones struck a multistory residential building, hitting one of the upper floors.
Astra identified the building as the Ladya residential complex, two kilometers (1.2 miles) from the Engels-2 military airfield. A fire also broke out at the airfield itself, the channel reported, citing eyewitness footage, though it was unclear what had caught fire. Ukraine’s armed forces have targeted the airfield more than once.
Russia’s air defenses shot down 375 drones overnight into July 16 over 18 regions of the country, annexed Crimea, the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea, the Defense Ministry said.
Ukrainian drones strike Russian regions nearly every day. Ukraine’s armed forces say they target military and industrial sites. Oil facilities across Russia have suspended operations because of the attacks.
