International Volleyball Federation lifts ban on Russian athletes after International Olympic Committee’s reversal

The International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) has cleared Russian athletes to compete in events held under its auspices.

This followed a recent decision by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to lift restrictions on Russian athletes.

Russia’s national teams will be reinstated in the world rankings with the same number of points they held when their rankings were frozen.

Whether Russian flags and anthems will be permitted at competitions has been left to the FIVB and the European Volleyball Confederation (CEV) to decide, in coordination with the relevant international sports organizations, “at the appropriate time.”

The day before, the IOC recommended lifting all restrictions on Russian athletes and temporarily reinstated the Russian Olympic Committee. Russian athletes had been barred from international competition following the start of Russia’s war against Ukraine in 2022.

FIFA and UEFA, however, have no immediate plans to lift restrictions barring Russian clubs and national teams from international tournaments, according to sources cited by the British newspaper The Telegraph.
