In Russia’s Oryol region, schoolgirls who are officially registered as pregnant will receive payments of 100,000 rubles (about $1,200), according to a decree signed by regional governor Andrey Klychkov.
In December, Klychkov introduced similar payments for pregnant students enrolled in universities and vocational schools. According to estimates by the news outlet 7x7, more than 40 Russian regions have introduced payments for pregnant people, including students.
In January 2025, President Vladimir Putin directed the government to amend legislation to raise maternity benefits for full-time students. Currently, the payments are calculated based on student stipends and range from 10,000 to 23,000 rubles ($120-$270) over the course of the pregnancy. The Labor Ministry said that under the new system, benefits would range from 74,000 rubles ($880) in the Lipetsk and Tambov regions to 235,000 rubles ($2,790) in the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug, depending on the regional subsistence minimum.
