Miles of shoreline in Russia’s Krasnodar Krai polluted after tankers spill oil into Black Sea
On Tuesday morning, oil from two tankers that sank in the Kerch Strait on Sunday washed ashore along the coast of Russia’s Krasnodar Krai, Governor Veniamin Kondratyev said.
Oil products were found along several dozen kilometers of shoreline, stretching from the village of Veselovka in the Temryuksky district to the town of Blagoveshchenskaya in Anapa, according to the governor.
Rescue teams and volunteers have been dispatched to the affected areas to manage the cleanup, Kondratyev said. Local authorities have declared a state of emergency in Anapa, Blagoveshchenskaya, and Veselovka.
The two Russian tankers, Volgoneft-212 and Volgoneft-239, sank in the Kerch Strait during a storm on December 15. Emergency services reported that the vessels were carrying a combined total of about 9,200 tons of petroleum products, which spilled into the Black Sea.
