Plans to build “super prison” near Ulan-Ude, a city in Russia’s Far East, have been shelved, Buryatia Governor Alexey Tsydenov announced during a press conference.
“This project has been abandoned due to the lack of funding. Besides, for obvious reasons, the prisons are now mostly empty. The urgency of construction has diminished,” Tsydenov said.
He added that there is no revised timeline for the project, and plans for the prison have been postponed indefinitely.
For more than two years, Russia has been recruiting prisoners to fight in the war in Ukraine. The exact number of inmates recruited from prisons and detention centers remains unknown. However, in 2023, the number of inmates in Russian prisons decreased by more than 54,000 people.
