Russian lawmakers to consider bill requiring language test for children of migrants to enroll in schools

Russian State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin said on Tuesday that lawmakers will consider a bill to ban migrant children from enrolling in schools if they don’t know Russian, state media reported.

According to Volodin, the legislation would require these children to undergo language testing when enrolling in educational institutions. The bill’s authors also propose verifying the children’s legal status.

Volodin did not specify when the bill would be submitted to the State Duma.

Following the March 22 terrorist attack at Moscow's Crocus City Hall concert venue, in which four Tajik nationals were arrested as suspects, Russian authorities have increasingly adopted policies to curb migration and restrict migrants' rights.
