Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky appointed Anatolii Barhylevych as the new Chief of the General Staff of Ukraine’s Armed Forces (AFU), he said in his daily video address. The post was previously held by Lieutenant General Serhiy Shaptala.

Prior to his appointment as AFU’s Chief of the General Staff, Barhylevych commanded Ukraine’s Territorial Defense Forces.

“Upon the recommendation of the Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi, Major General Anatolii Barhylevych has been appointed as the new Chief of the General Staff. He is an experienced individual who understands the tasks of this war and Ukraine’s objectives,” stated the Ukrainian President, as cited by RBC Ukraine.

Zelensky added that Syrskyi had already identified candidates for deputy positions, but didn’t identify who they were.

“All of them are combat-ready, professional individuals, each with a clear understanding of the front line and the real needs of Ukrainian soldiers,” Zelensky added.
