Vladimir Putin has signed a decree that officially suspends Russia’s cooperation with the New START Treaty, the sole nuclear arms control agreement between Russia and the U.S.
According to the document, a decision to renew Russia’s compliance with the treaty can be made by the head of state. The new law is effective immediately.
Putin first announced his plans to suspend Russia’s compliance with the nuclear agreement during his Federal Assembly address of February 21.
