Russian missile strike on Kyiv kills one, leaves homes, hospitals, and schools without heat

Russia launched a missile strike on Kyiv on Friday morning, killing one person and injuring nine others, according to local authorities. Around 7 a.m. local time, Mayor Vitali Klitschko warned that air defense systems were active in the capital. Soon after, reports surfaced that missile debris had fallen in various parts of the city. Klitschko later said the strike left 630 apartment buildings, 16 medical facilities, 17 schools, and 13 kindergartens without heat. Meduza shares photos of the aftermath.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said the strike was a response to Wednesday’s attack using ATACMS and Storm Shadow missiles on the Kamensky Combine, a chemical plant in Russia’s Rostov region that produces rocket fuel for the military. The ministry claimed that Russian forces were targeting an SBU command post, Kyiv’s Luch Design Bureau, and a Patriot air defense system.
