Russia opens administrative case against anti-war politician Boris Nadezhdin over Meduza interview

Authorities have drawn up an administrative citation against politician Boris Nadezhdin, accusing him of participating in the activities of an “undesirable organization” (Article 20.33 of Russia’s Administrative Offenses Code), the press service of the Moscow courts reported.

The case stems from an interview Nadezhdin gave to Meduza, which Russia has designated an “undesirable organization.” The interview appeared on the outlet’s YouTube channel on July 14.

The administrative charge of participating in the activities of an “undesirable organization” carries a fine of up to 15,000 rubles.

Boris Nadezhdin filed papers in mid-June 2026 to run as an independent candidate in elections to the State Duma, the lower house of Russia’s parliament, and began collecting signatures in support of his candidacy. On July 10, the Justice Ministry designated him a “foreign agent,” and three days later, he was detained. Nadezhdin was cited under the statute on displaying “extremist symbols” over a photograph of Alexey Navalny and was later fined 1,000 rubles. He was also barred from leaving Russia. The “foreign agent” designation and the fine made him ineligible to run in the elections.

In a video posted from Paris on August 3, Nadezhdin announced that he had left Russia.
