Moscow IVF clinic adds ‘terrorist and extremist’ designation notice to Telegram founder Pavel Durov’s sperm donor profile

AltraVita, a Moscow fertility clinic that offers in vitro fertilization (IVF) using Telegram founder Pavel Durov’s donor sperm, has added a notice to its website stating that Durov has been placed on the list of terrorists and extremists maintained by Russia’s Federal Financial Monitoring Service (Rosfinmonitoring). The Telegram channel Kontekst was first to notice the change.

Russia’s Federal Security Service (the FSB) announced on July 29 that it had opened a criminal case against Durov on charges of aiding terrorism. Rosfinmonitoring added him to its list on July 30. Journalists then recalled that AltraVita offers IVF using his donor sperm, and the clinic confirmed the procedure remains available.

AltraVita added the notice to Durov’s name a few hours later, and clinic director Sergei Yakovenko did not rule out ending the clinic’s agreement with the Telegram founder. “Lawyers are looking into this now,” Yakovenko told Daily Storm.

Pavel Durov said in July 2024 that he became a sperm donor 15 years earlier, and that his donor material has since helped more than 100 couples in 12 countries become parents.

IVF using Durov’s sperm at AltraVita is free, with Durov reimbursing the clinic for all expenses related to programs that use his sperm.

Russian law does not require AltraVita to disclose that Rosfinmonitoring added Durov to its list. Such a requirement exists only for organizations that have been designated extremist or terrorist.
