Moscow courthouse sees protests ahead of sentencing in controversial extremism case

On the afternoon of August 6, ahead of the <a href="https://meduza.io/en/news/2020/08/04/activists-and-former-political-prisoners-release-video-defending-suspects-in-controversial-russian-extremism-case" target="_blank">announcement of the verdicts</a> in the controversial “Novoe Velichie” (New Greatness) extremism case, a small group of activists held a <a href="https://meduza.io/news/2020/08/06/pered-prigovorom-po-delu-novogo-velichiya-u-suda-zaderzhali-aktivistov-v-politseyskoy-forme-odin-iz-nih-pererezal-gorlo-manekenu" target="_blank">protest action</a> outside of Moscow’s Lublinsky Court. One activist, dressed in a police uniform, recited a poem that ended with the phrase “a sacrifice is being made here” and then proceeded to slit the throat of a mannequin with a box cutter, releasing a stream of fake blood. The paint spattered the clothes of one of the defendants in the case, <a href="https://meduza.io/en/news/2020/07/21/defendant-in-controversial-new-greatness-extremism-case-files-lawsuit-for-illegal-detention" target="_blank">Anna Pavlikova</a> (pictured above). Police officers arrested three protesters involved in the action.
