Russian republic of Tuva reappoints Lyudmila Narusova to Federation Council after reports that the longtime senator would be replaced
Lyudmila Narusova will continue to represent Tuva in Russia’s Federation Council. The republic’s head, Vladislav Khovalyg, signed a decree reappointing her.
In June, Kommersant reported that Narusova’s term would not be renewed and that Tuva would send someone else to the Federation Council.
Narusova has represented Tuva in the Federation Council since 2002, apart from 2010–2012, when she represented the Bryansk region. She served in the State Duma from 1995 to 1999.
Narusova was one of three senators who abstained in the 2020 vote on constitutional amendments that included a provision “resetting” the count of Vladimir Putin’s previous presidential terms. She has also publicly criticized some controversial proposals, including “electronic draft summonses” and restrictions on draft evaders.
Narusova is the widow of former St. Petersburg mayor Anatoly Sobchak and the mother of Ksenia Sobchak.
