Hungary expels 10 Russian diplomats
Hungary has ordered 10 Russian diplomats to leave the country, Foreign Minister Anita Orban announced.
According to Orban, Hungarian authorities determined that staff at the Russian diplomatic mission had been engaged in activity incompatible with their diplomatic status and in violation of the Vienna Convention. The Russian ambassador was notified of the decision on Tuesday.
“This decision protects Hungary’s security and sovereignty. It does not imply breaking off diplomatic relations with Russia. Hungary intends to continue the necessary dialogue, based on mutual respect and adherence to the rules,” Orban wrote on the social network X.
The expulsions come amid a marked cooling in relations between Hungary and Russia following a change of government in the spring of 2026. Under Prime Minister Viktor Orban, Budapest routinely opposed European Union sanctions against Russia and criticized military aid to Ukraine. His successor, Peter Magyar, is also reluctant to help Kyiv with weapons, but he has condemned Russian aggression and backs closer ties between Hungary and the EU and NATO.
