Russia’s Military Historical Society says it’s preparing a ‘truthful’ textbook on Ukrainian history
The Russian Military Historical Society is preparing a textbook on the history of Ukraine for publication in Russia, the organization’s research director, Mikhail Myagkov, said.
“I can let you in on a little secret: a textbook is now being prepared, specifically a textbook on the history of Ukraine. Not in Ukraine, but in Russia. I won’t reveal all the details, but it will cover history from ancient times,” Myagkov said at a press conference in Moscow.
Myagkov said the book “will be a truthful textbook” that will, among other things, “cover the main points concerning the unity of the Old Rus people” and address the emergence of the term “Ukrainism.”
A separate challenge, Myagkov said, is how to “get the truth to schoolchildren in the territory that is still under the control of the Kyiv regime today.”
He did not specify which grade levels the textbook targets, when it will be published, or who wrote it.
Russia updated its lineup of world history and national history textbooks for grades 10 and 11 in 2023, with Vladimir Medinsky, head of the Russian Military Historical Society, serving as an editor.
Russian Education Minister Sergei Kravtsov showed off a textbook titled History of Donbas and Novorossiya for grades five to seven at the St. Petersburg Economic Forum in the summer of 2026, saying it presents “a unified history connected to the course of Russian history” and “objective information, not the lies that were in Ukrainian textbooks.”
