Officials in Vladivostok warn of phone and internet service disruptions when Putin arrives next month for Russia’s Eastern Economic Forum
Authorities in Russia’s Primorsky Krai warned residents and visitors that phone and internet service could be disrupted during the Eastern Economic Forum, set to take place in Vladivostok from September 1 to 4.
The disruptions would affect both mobile and landline service, as part of a broader effort to ensure the safety of participants and guests at the international forum, the regional administration said.
“Temporary restrictions on communications are possible near the main venue of the forum, the campus of the Far Eastern Federal University, as well as on the main roads leading to it,” authorities said.
The regional Digital Development Ministry said that the shutdowns would be limited to specific locations rather than the entire region.
Forum organizers previously said that Russian President Vladimir Putin would attend.
Authorities in various Russian regions regularly shut off internet access under the pretext of defending against Ukrainian drone strikes. These shutdowns also accompany international events held in Russia, such as the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF).
