U.S. President Donald Trump told reporters in Washington that Ukrainian refugees will likely be allowed to remain in the United States until Russia’s invasion ends, Ukrainian outlet Suspilne reports.
Asked whether he would let Ukrainians who fled the war stay in the U.S. until it’s over, Trump replied: “I think we will. We have a lot of people who came here from Ukraine and we’re working with them.” Journalist Alex Raufoglu posted video of the exchange.
Since Russia launched its full-scale war against Ukraine in 2022, the U.S. has admitted tens of thousands of Ukrainians under the Uniting for Ukraine program, which allows those with U.S.-based sponsors to enter the country. According to Forbes, as of June 2025, more than 236,000 sponsorship applications had been approved and over 187,000 Ukrainians had arrived.
At the start of Trump’s second term in March 2025, Reuters reported, citing informed sources, that U.S. authorities were planning to revoke the legal status of some 240,000 Ukrainian refugees who had arrived after 2022. The White House dismissed the report as fake.
