Russia’s Prosecutor General’s Office has declared Amnesty International an “undesirable” organization, according to a statement released on Monday.
The agency accused the organization’s London headquarters of serving as “a hub for coordinating global Russophobic projects, funded by supporters of the Kyiv regime.” Prosecutors claimed that Amnesty’s activists “do everything possible to intensify military confrontation in the region — justifying the crimes of Ukrainian neo-Nazis, calling for increased funding for them, and pushing for the political and economic isolation of our country.”
The statement also alleged that Amnesty International “supports extremist organizations” and “finances the activities of foreign agents.”
Amnesty International has not yet been added to the Russian Justice Ministry’s official registry of “undesirable” organizations, though such listings typically follow about a week after the Prosecutor General’s designation. As of now, 223 organizations appear on the list.
