Trump's attendance at Russia–Ukraine talks in Istanbul will depend largely on whether Putin joins — CNN

Source: CNN

Whether Donald Trump travels to Istanbul to join the May 15 talks between Russia and Ukraine will depend largely on whether Russian President Vladimir Putin attends the meeting, CNN reports, citing a White House official.

“It is all very dynamic right now,” the source said, adding that “no one knows much” yet about who will be present at the talks.

The official said that the possibility of Trump joining the meeting puts “a lot of pressure on Putin.”

The upcoming talks were first announced by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. In addition to Trump’s possible attendance, according to Reuters, U.S. special envoys Steve Witkoff and Keith Kellogg are expected to join.

The Kremlin has yet to say who will represent Russia at the talks and whether Putin might take part. Earlier on Tuesday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that an announcement would be made “as soon as the president deems it necessary.”
