Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree on Tuesday renaming the airport in Volgograd to Stalingrad, after the city's Soviet-era name, the Kremlin’s press service reports.
The idea was put forward by Volgograd Governor Andrey Bocharov during a meeting with Putin in the city earlier that day. Bocharov said he had been “frequently approached by residents of the Volgograd region, the city of Volgograd, and other regions” asking that the airport be given “a real, proud, courageous, and heroic name — Stalingrad.” These people included “veterans and participants in the special military operation,” he said.
“Their word is law to me,” Putin replied. “That’s what we’ll do: as soon as I return to Moscow, a corresponding decree will be prepared and signed to officially name the airport after Stalingrad.”
