Zurab Tsereteli, Russian-Georgian artist known for large-scale monuments, dies at 91

Zurab Tsereteli, a Russian-Georgian painter and sculptor who served as president of the Russian Academy of Arts, has died at the age of 91, according to state media.

“Yes, it happened today at half past one in the morning,” he assistant told Interfax.

A People’s Artist of the USSR, Tsereteli created more than 5,000 works, including paintings, sculptures, monuments, frescoes, and murals. He was best known for his towering monuments to Peter the Great and Friendship Forever in Moscow, and he played a major role in the reconstruction of the city's Cathedral of Christ the Savior. His works can also be seen internationally — among them, Good Defeats Evil outside the United Nations headquarters in New York, Birth of a New Man in Seville, and Break the Wall of Distrust in London.
