The Russian tech holding VK plans to launch a beta version of its new digital platform, Max, in the spring of 2025, according to Vedomosti, which cited sources familiar with the matter. A company spokesperson confirmed the report.
The platform will initially include a messenger, mini-apps, a chatbot builder, and a payment system. Over time, VK intends to integrate government and other services aimed at helping users manage everyday tasks.
The beta version of Max will appear in app stores soon, the spokesperson said. In its early phase, the app will support messaging, voice messages, and file transfers of up to four gigabytes.
A source close to the company told Vedomosti that if Max successfully incorporates government services, it could evolve into a Russian equivalent of China’s WeChat.
VK’s net loss nearly tripled in 2024, rising from 34.2 billion rubles to 94.9 billion rubles ($407 million to $1.1 billion) compared to the previous year, Reuters reported. The company attributed the loss to increased spending on content creation, technical infrastructure, and staffing — part of a broader effort to grow its audience.
