A St. Petersburg court has sentenced two students at the Saint Petersburg State University of Telecommunications to five days in jail each after finding them guilty of “publicly displaying Nazi symbols,” MR7 reported.
The first- and second-year students were arrested on February 13. According to Fontanka, they had been shouting a “Ukrainian greeting” on campus that day.
The university’s deputy vice rector for security reported them to the police, and a patrol unit arrived to take the students into custody.
The students later said they had been daring each other to see who could shout the phrase louder. “We didn’t intend to display any symbols or offend anyone… It was just a dumb joke,” one of the students said.
