‘Congress will send us the list, and we’ll hand it over to the FSB’: Russian State Duma speaker says Russians who received money from USAID should ‘repent on Red Square’
Russian State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin said that Russian politicians, human rights advocates, and public figures who received funding from USAID should “publicly confess and repent on Red Square.” He made the statement during a parliamentary session. Kommersant published part of his speech.
“These people have left, hoping that USAID will continue funding them abroad. But now they’ll be sitting there, hungry and cold, waiting for another handout. No one is going to give them anything,” Volodin said.
The Duma speaker also suggested that the Russian authorities should request a list from Congress of all Russian nationals who had received USAID funding. “If they’ve declared [USAID] an enemy organization, then let them provide the names. Congress will send us the list, and we’ll hand it over to the FSB,” he added.
