Russian forces struck the center of Izyum, a city in Ukraine’s Kharkiv region on Tuesday, killing at least five people, according to Governor Oleh Syniehubov.

Fifty-five people were injured, Syniehubov said. Earlier, the governor had reported that more than 40 people sought medical attention, with 24 hospitalized, including three in serious condition. Among the injured are a six-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl, both in moderate condition.

The strike partially destroyed multiple administrative buildings and damaged 170 apartments in a residential building. Preliminary reports indicate that a ballistic missile was used, Syniehubov said.

Izyum’s mayor, Valerii Marchenko, told Suspilne that the missile hit an administrative building, damaging it, a nearby building, and several apartment blocks. “There were no soldiers here. These were buildings housing public services — tax authorities, social services, the treasury. Civilians were killed, most likely people waiting at the passport office,” he said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky shared a video from Izyum and confirmed that part of the city council building had been destroyed. “This brutality cannot be tolerated. Russia must be pressured with greater force — more weapons, stronger sanctions, and stronger diplomacy — to stop the terror and protect lives,” he wrote.
