Jailed suspect accuses police of torture and rape with mop, leading to special request from head of Russia’s Dagestan Republic
A man jailed outside Moscow on illegal weapons manufacturing charges says police officers tortured him when he refused to unlock his phone and provide “necessary testimony.” According to a police report filed six days after his arrest, Magomed Magomedov’s relatives include Islamic State supporters — some wanted by police and living in Syria. Magomedov was arrested for possession of eight cartridges and equipment to convert a non-lethal pistol into a combat weapon.
The judge in Magomedov’s pretrial detention hearing reviewed footage showing the injuries he allegedly sustained during his interrogation. The man’s lawyers say their client was beaten and electrocuted on his groin, legs, buttocks, and hands before officers forced a mop stick into his anus.
The news outlet Kavkazsky Uzel reports that Magomedov is a native of Dagestan. Dagestan Republic head Sergey Melnikov has asked Federal Investigative Committee director Alexander Bastrykin and Internal Affairs Minister Vladimir Kolokoltsev to handle Magomedov’s directly.
