A British citizen reportedly captured by Russian forces while fighting for Ukraine has been remanded into custody by a Russian court.

James Scott Rhys Anderson is accused of illegally crossing the border with the Ukrainian military and participating in combat operations in the Kursk region. The hearing, held on November 25, was conducted behind closed doors.

The court’s press service did not disclose the charges against Anderson but described him as a suspect in “a series of especially serious crimes posing significant public danger.”

Russian state media reported on November 25 that Anderson had been captured by Russian forces. The Guardian noted that his case appears to be the first known instance of a Western soldier being captured on Russian soil.

U.K. Foreign Secretary David Lammy said he was aware of the case and that the government would do everything possible to support Anderson. He added that British officials are in contact with Anderson’s family.
