The next four or months will be “pivotal” for determining Ukraine’s negotiating position in potential talks to end the war, Reuters reported on Monday, citing a senior official in Kyiv.

The official predicted the upcoming winter will be a “critical point,” saying: “I hope the war is drawing to an end. Right now we will define the positions for both sides on negotiations, the starting positions.”

The official also said that it feels “less likely” that Ukraine will receive an invitation to join NATO after Donald Trump’s victory in the U.S. election and that there’s a risk Trump will reduce military aid to Kyiv. The overall mood among Ukrainian officials is “pretty bleak,” the source added: “You can see the increasing frustration in Zelenskiy’s recent remarks.”
