The cost of restoring damaged infrastructure in Russia’s Kursk region after attacks by the Ukrainian army is expected to top 700 billion rubles (over $7 billion), according to Governor Alexey Smirnov, Interfax reports.

“From the very beginning, we've been working not only with the local population but also with all commercial entities. We have an approximate estimate of the damage to agriculture and industry. We also know the extent of damage to our social institutions, roads, engineering and utility infrastructure, and bridges,” Smirnov said.

According to official data, the Kursk region’s gross regional product for 2023 amounted to 796.5 billion rubles ($8.1 billion).

Ukrainian forces are currently shelling the Kursk region almost daily, and several hundred square kilometers of the region remain under Ukrainian control.
