Finland extends border closure with Russia until mid-April

Source: Meduza

The Finnish authorities have decided to keep the border with Russia closed until at least April 14, reports the Finnish Interior Ministry.

“We have seen no signs that Russia is changing its behavior. On the contrary, the information we have received confirms our assessment that Russia is continuing its hybrid operation,” said the Finnish Interior Minister Mari Rantanen.

The Finnish Interior Minister added: “Understandably, the continued total closure of the eastern border is distressing especially for people with family on the Russian side. However, the temporary closure of border crossing points is the result of Russia’s actions, which require Finland to put national security first.”

Finland started closing its border crossings with Russia in mid-November. The Finnish authorities said they made this decision due to the influx of migrants (mostly from the Middle East) arriving from Russia to seek asylum.
