Reuters: Houthis attack tanker carrying Russian oil after reportedly mistaking it for British ship

Houthi militants erroneously attacked a Panama-flagged tanker carrying Russian oil, reports Reuters citing a statement from the British security firm Ambrey.

Ambrey believes the vessel was targeted because outdated information in a public maritime database associated it with the U.K.

According to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) organization, a missile was reported to have landed about 400-500 meters (1,312-1,640 feet) away from the tanker. The UKMTO added that there were no casualties resulting from the attack.

“This was the second tanker mistakenly targeted by the Houthis whilst carrying Russian oil,” Reuters quotes Ambrey as saying.

Houthi militants have been targeting ships in the Red Sea since fall. On November 14, the group announced it would attack any ship linked to Israel in response to “Israeli-US aggression on Gaza.”
