Putin to bring back USSR tradition of Athletes Parades on Red Square

Russian President Vladimir Putin has issued a directive to revive the tradition of Athletes Parades on Moscow’s Red Square. According to the order, which was published on the Kremlin’s website, government officials have until March 2024 to prepare proposals for the event.

The first Athletes Parade took place in 1919. From 1931, Joseph Stalin held these parades annually. Thousands of people participated in these events. The last large-scale Athletes Parade on Red Square took place in August 1945, in celebration of the Soviet Union’s victory in WWII.
