A deputy in Ukraine’s Zakarpattia region set off grenades in a meeting of the Keretsky Village Council on Friday, killing at least one person and injuring at least 26 people, according to the Ukrainian National Police.
The authorities initially reported that the deputy himself was killed but later said doctors were attempting to resuscitate him.
It’s unclear what the man’s motives were. According to preliminary reports from the news site Strana.ua, the perpetrator was a council member named Serhiy Batrin.
A video shared by the police shows a man entering the council meeting and waiting for a bit before saying, “May I?” and throwing multiple grenades.
