Russian election authorities adopt resolution to hold presidential vote in annexed Ukrainian territories
Russia’s Central Election Commission (CEC) has adopted a resolution to hold presidential elections in the annexed territories of Ukraine in March 2024.
According to the CEC’s Telegram channel, the decision follows consultations between the commission itself, the Russian Defense Ministry, and the Federal Security Service (FSB), as well as the Moscow-backed heads of the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk “people’s republics” and the Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions.
On December 7, the Russian authorities announced that the country’s next presidential vote will be held from March 15–17. Meduza has previously reported on the extensive measures the Kremlin plans to take to ensure Vladimir Putin’s reelection regardless of the actual votes cast.
