Ukraine to stop transporting Russian gas to Europe after contract expires

Ukraine has no plans to extend the contract for Russian gas transit through its territory, which is set to expire at the end of 2024, said Naftogaz CEO Oleksiy Chernyshov in an interview with Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty’s Ukrainian service.

Chernyshov said that Ukraine decided against prematurely terminating the agreement since European countries currently rely on Russian gas, adding that the decision was not made out of fear of potential lawsuits from Russian energy corporation Gazprom.

Ukrainian Energy Minister German Galushchenko had previously stated that Ukraine is preparing its gas transportation system for the cessation of Russian gas transit.
