Putin describes Hamas insurgence as ‘vivid example of U.S. foreign policy failure’

Commenting for the first time on the Israeli–Palestinian conflict escalation that started on October 7 with the attack of Hamas insurgents on Israel, Russian President Vladimir Putin said it exemplifies the failure of U.S. foreign policy in the Near East and Washington’s lack of motivation in “looking for compromises for the two sides.”

Putin remarked on the situation in Israel and the Palestinian Gaza Strip when meeting with the Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al-Sudani. Video from the meeting was published by the VGTRK reporter Pavel Zarubin, with Putin saying:

I think many would agree with me about this being a vivid example of the failure of U.S. foreign policy in the Near East, where the U.S. tried to monopolize conflict regulation. Unfortunately, they weren’t looking for compromises for the two sides; on the contrary, they advanced their own ideas of how things should be done, putting pressure on both sides.

The Russian president also said that the U.S. failed to take the interests of Palestinian people into account.

According to Putin, Russia’s position is to “minimize the damage to civilian population,” which, he said, is what Russia would like to see all sides try to do.
