Yandex agrees to relocate Kazakhstan branch servers after Astana briefly blocks site

Yandex will relocate the servers of its Kazakhstan branch, Yandex.kz, to Kazakhstan, the country’s digital development minister reportedly said Monday.

The announcement came several days after Kazakhstani officials met with Yandex representatives to discuss the protection of Kazakhstani users’ personal data and the placement of the servers in Kazakhstan.

“As part of an effort to strengthen our partnership and national digital resources, Yandex confirmed its willingness to proceed with the transfer of servers for the domain yandex.kz to the country’s territory, as was done previously for the service Yandex Go,” a ministry representative said.

On August 9, the Kazakhstani authorities restricted access to the site yandex.kz, citing the fact that the site’s servers were located outside of the country.
