An employee of the German armed forces was arrested in the city of Koblenz on suspicion of spying for Russia, reports the German Federal Prosecutor’s Office.

The office notes that the German citizen, who is referred to as Thomas H., worked in the German armed forces’ Office for Equipment, Information Technology and Utilization. German Justice Minister Marco Buschmann wrote that the suspect was a “German officer.”

According to the investigation, the suspect contacted the Russian consulate general in Bonn and the Russian embassy in Berlin several times since May 2023 on his own initiative, offering to cooperate with them. The prosecutor also said that the suspect once transferred information, which he had obtained while carrying out his professional duties, to the Russian authorities.

The prosecutor’s statement says that the order for Thomas H.’s arrest was made on July 27. He is currently in custody and faces up to 10 years in prison if found guilty, writes German newspaper Bild.
