At least 240 Russian military personnel, including several high-ranking officers, were killed during the first month of Ukraine’s counteroffensive, according to new data collected by volunteers and journalists from Mediazona and BBC News Russia.

Between June 4 and July 7, the team confirmed the deaths of 553 people on the Russian side, but they were unable to determine the dates of 313 of the deaths. According to the investigation’s authors, their figure is the “minimum possible number of Russian losses,” and the actual number is “definitely higher.”

The number includes 18 Russian officers, including one general, two colonels, and three lieutenant-colonels. It does not include the 13 military pilots who were killed during Wagner Group’s rebellion in late June.

The team has confirmed the deaths of 27,423 people on the Russian side since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
