A man carrying explosives tried to enter Russia’s Rostov region from the territory of the Russian-annexed “Donetsk People’s Republic” on Wednesday, according to the Telegram channels Baza, Mash, and Shot.

The incident occurred on the evening of May 23 around the region’s Veselo-Voznesenka border crossing. According to the reports on Telegram, the man climbed over a fence and tried to run through the forest towards the settlement of Maksimov. He was reportedly spotted by border guards, who began chasing him, but an explosion occurred and he died before they caught him.

Baza noted that it’s still unclear exactly what happened and that it’s possible the explosives were detonated on accident, while Mash and Shot reported that the man intentionally set them off.

The Russian authorities have not commented on the incident. According to the Telegram channels, the incident is under investigation.
