Wagner Group founder Evgeny Prigozhin said Friday that his mercenaries will hand over their positions in Bakhmut to units from the Russian Defense Ministry, and that the group’s remaining fighters will be sent to support bases in the rear.

“I’m withdrawing Wagner Group units from Bakhmut, because without ammunition, they’re doomed to die meaningless deaths,” Prigozhin said in a video statement addressed to Russia’s military command, Vladimir Putin, and the Russian people.

On Thursday night, Prigozhin released a video that showed him cursing at Russia’s military leadership and demanding ammunition supplies as he stood in front of rows of dead bodies.
