Mayor of Odesa Gennadiy Trukhanov has been arrested on charges of embezzling more than 92 million hryvnias (around $2.5 million), reports Ukraine’s Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecution (SAP) office.
The prosecution alleges that in 2016, the Odesa city council acquired the premises of a bankrupt factory, called Krayan, at an inflated price and tried to withdraw the difference via a fictitious enterprise, reports UNIAN.
SAP specifies that the mayor was taken into custody because he previously failed to post bail, which was set at more than 30 million hryvnias (around $812,000). Now the court has ordered Trukhanov remain in custody for 60 days, with the right to post bail of 13 million hryvnias (around $350,000).
