U.S. introduces new sanctions on Russia on anniversary of the invasion of Ukraine

On the anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the United States has introduced new restrictions on Russia.

President Joe Biden announced a 200 percent tariff on aluminum and aluminum products from Russia, which will take effect on March 10.

The U.S. State Department imposed sanctions on a number of Russian officials, including Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova and her husband, former Deputy Prime Minister Viktor Khristenko. The new sanctions will also affect 47 regional governors, nine government ministers (including the Ministers of Culture, Emergency Services, Sport, Energy, and Digital Development), the propagandist Olga Skabeeva, and 1,219 military service members.

The Treasury Department introduced sanctions against 22 individuals and 83 entities, including 22 Russian banks. The Department of Commerce tightened export sanctions and blacklisted another 76 Russian entities, including mobile phone operator MegaFon and research institute Skoltech.

On February 24, the U.K, Australia, and New Zealand also announced new sanctions on Russia.
