10 pregnant Russian women stuck in airport limbo as Buenos Aires immigration service scrutinizes their reasons for traveling
Argentina immigration authorities in Buenos Aires have denied entry to several pregnant Russian tourists, writes Sirena, citing the husband of one of the women who flew to Argentina but couldn’t cross the border.
According to Sirena, one pregnant woman was detained on the border on February 7, two more on February 8, and around 15 on February 9. Those of them who came with their families were later released, Sirena clarifies.
As of today, 10 pregnant Russian women are stuck at the Pistarini International Airport in Buenos Aires, reports Current Time.
According to one Telegram channel, the authorities are suspecting pregnant tourists of traveling with an intent to give birth in Argentina (gaining birthright citizenship for the newborn). The same source reports that two of the detained women have sued the immigration service, and one of them has already won her case.
In 2022, Argentina became an attractive choice for Russian emigrants, who don’t need a visa to travel to Argentina. The Russian consulate in Buenos Aires claims that up to 2,500 Russians emigrated there in 2022, and up to 10,000 more could potentially move to Argentina this year.
