2021 Nobel laureates Dmitry Muratov and Maria Ressa call on Red Cross to help jailed Russian opposition politician Alexey Navalny
Novaya Gazeta editor-in-chief Dmitry Muratov and Filipina journalist Maria Ressa, both winners of the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize, have called on the International Committee of the Red Cross to intervene in the case of jailed Russian opposition politician Alexey Navalny.
“Do as your universal humanitarian principle tells you to do: Prevent human suffering,” reads the journalists’ joint statement. “[…] As long as [Navalny’s] torment continues, we are all accomplices to the executioners.”
According to Novaya Gazeta, a Red Cross representative said in response to the statement that the organization “has no mandate for such actions.”
